Northeast Asia’s “Golden Aviation Circle” has been completed with the formal commencement in April of flights between Taipei Songshan Airport and Seoul Gimpo Airport, following the opening of routes between Songshan and Shanghai Hongqiao International Airport and Tokyo Haneda International Airport. This fast and convenient air network will boost business connections among the three countries and help businesses further expand their economic and trade territory in Northeast Asia.
Gimpo International Airport, Korea’s second largest airport, is located only 12 kilometers from Seoul, while Songshan Airport is situated in downtown Taipei City. After the official opening of flights between these two airports, travelers can save around two hours on journeys between the two capital cities, which represents a big boon for those who travel frequently between Taipei and Seoul.
In the initial stage of the Songshan-Gimpo route’s opening, flights will be operated by Taiwan’s EVA Air and China Airlines and by Korea’s Eastar Jet and T’way Airlines. There will be two round-trip flights every day, one by an airline from each side, on all seven days of the week.
The Civil Aeronautics Administration (CAA) said that, to enhance the convenience of business and tourist travel between Taiwan and Korea, and to spur trade and tourism connections between the two countries, consideration will be given to conducting air transport negotiations with Korea and revising related regulations as a follow-up to the opening of this route. The CAA does not rule out opening the route to third carriers, to further narrow the distance between the two countries.
