The Department of Investment Services of the Ministry of Economic Affairs and the Taoyuan City Government jointly hosted the 2017 Global Taiwan Business Innovative Entrepreneurship Forum on September 22 at Hotel Novotel in Taoyuan. The purpose of the forum was to attract Taiwanese businesses and innovative entrepreneurs from all over the world to invest in and start their businesses in Taiwan, and to use innovative entrepreneurship to help diversify Taoyuan's industry development momentum. "Connecting the globe with entrepreneurs and investors—a formula for success" was chosen as the theme of the event, which focused on discovering investment opportunities among Taoyuan's innovative entrepreneurs. The forum served as a match-making platform for investors and startups by seeking investment targets for capital providers and resources for startup teams. More than 30 innovators and entrepreneurs attended the forum; more than 20 institutional investors and more than 80 companies attended to look for investment opportunities; and potential investments from capital providers totaled more than NT$6 billion.
The Ministry of Economic Affairs noted that the World Taiwanese Chambers of Commerce (WTCC) have a global distribution network, which is an extension of Taiwan's economic strength and is highly valued by the government. More than 60 Taiwanese businesses representing 20 countries attended the forum to look for investment opportunities. The fact that Taiwanese businesses from all over the world return to Taiwan to invest indicates that advantages from each area will be brought into Taiwan, which is very beneficial to increasing Taiwan's economic momentum.
During his remarks, the mayor of Taoyuan City, Wen-Tsan Cheng, thanked the WTCC for choosing Taoyuan in their search for strategic partners and opportunities for cooperation. Taoyuan is a young city that has complete industrial and supply chains in such fields as electronic components, cloud computing, smart logistics, smart and green energy, and electric vehicles. The city is now actively promoting key policies, and it will be the driving engine of Taiwan's economic growth in the future. Taoyuan is an accommodating city, and it is willing to build convenient channels for the investment of Taiwan businesses and become their strategic operation partner.
This forum especially invited Chih-Hung Hsieh, Managing Director for the Taiwan region of the international medicine, materials, and life sciences giant Merck Group, to deliver a keynote speech. Hsieh pointed out that the key to Merck's remaining at the top of the industry since its founding in Germany in 1668 is its constant innovation. Merck has a sound mechanism for innovation and will make good use of Taiwan's innovative strengths to find innovative applications for its own materials. Hsieh also welcomes Taiwan's innovators to work with Merck for mutual benefit.
In light of the trend of companies reaching into Southeast Asia due to the New Southbound Policy, Chih-Lung Shih, the honorary president of WTCC Asia, specially addressed the topic of entrepreneurial opportunities and experiences in the ASEAN market, sharing formulas for business success in that market. These formulas covered aspects of regulation, market observation, resource utilization, and more, by drawing on the investing experiences of ASEAN's regional center, Singapore. Shih's ideas resonated with the businesses in attendance. Furthermore, Edward Lin, the honorary president from Oceania, took especial care to speak about the entrepreneurial environment and opportunities in Australia. A professional accountant, Lin used his long-term experience in helping companies invest in Australia to explain the significant room for cooperation between Taiwan and Australia in such aspects as agriculture, tourism, and green energy.
Taiwan is currently dedicated to developing innovative industries in the expectation of using them to boost economic growth. The WTCC is also actively involved by building innovation and entrepreneurship platforms all around the globe, which are used to expand its business territory and find partners for strategic cooperation. Chen-Yuan Chiu, the president of the World Taiwanese Chambers of Commerce Junior Chapter (WTCCJC), attended the forum and shared the results of the WTCCJC's innovative entrepreneurship promotion work. Chiu pointed out that overseas Taiwanese businesses and the junior chamber can be seen as overseas market channels, and that they are strategic partners in the global distribution networks of domestic companies. Taiwan has competitive advantages in areas such as manufacturing, R&D, and parts and components. Thus, connecting Taiwanese businesses and the junior chamber with Taiwan's advantages will create a beneficial situation for all involved.
As the forum came to a close, Sung-Wei Chu, the Director General of the Department of Economic Development of Taoyuan City, introduced Taoyuan's regional advantages, the progress of the promotion of the Asia Silicon Valley Development Agency (ASVDA), and related innovation and upgrade measures for industry. Then, Taoyuan's potential start-up teams held their business opportunity showcase, demonstrating Taoyuan's innovative strengths in such fields as electronics, information & communications, and biotechnology & medicine. This forum was met with enthusiasm from all parts of society. In the future, the Ministry of Economic Affairs and the Taoyuan City Government will cooperate in providing investment services and assisting investors to implement their investment plans.
