The 5th Finland-Taiwan Trade Talk was convened in Taipei on August 22 and co-hosted by MOEA Vice Minister Mei-Hua Wang and Petri Peltonen, Under-Secretary of State at Finland’s Ministry of Economic Affairs and Employment.
Finland is Taiwan’s 15th largest trade partner in the European Union (EU). Bilateral trades totaled US$534 million in 2017 and rose by 33% between January and July 2018. The increase is the 4th largest bilateral trade growth between the Republic of China and an EU member and suggests great potential in bilateral trade.
This trade talk encompassed a variety of economic and trade issues, including investment, energy, IoT, AI, education, startup chaining, circular economy, innovative policy and other topics of interest to both parties. The Finland-Taiwan exchange ventured into a wide range of topics and delved extensively into new innovative applications, such as the application of new technology in education.
Vice Minister Wang said the rise of next generation technologies such as IoT and AI is transforming the manufacturing and service sectors and business models around the world. She also anticipates that Finland and Taiwan, nations that excel in software and hardware respectively, will be able to complement each other. Furthermore, the Taiwanese government has invited the Finnish government to GEC+ Taipei in Taiwan this September and the Taiwan Automation Intelligence and Robot Show and the Smart City Summit & Expo in 2019. It is expected the two countries will continue to develop a friendly relationship and jointly create more business opportunities.
According to the Bureau of Foreign Trade, Under-Secretary of State Peltonen led a delegation consisting of business representatives from the energy, environmental conservation, and education sectors. Finnish businesses and CEICA also co-hosted the 6th Finland-Taiwan Economic and Trade Cooperation Meeting. Meanwhile, as the Finnish trade promotion organization (Finpro) and the Finnish Funding Agency for Innovation (Tekes) have merged into Business Finland this January, to continue efforts in promoting cooperation between the two countries, the Taiwan External Trade Development Council and Business Finland signed a new MOU on trade facilitation with Business Finland that was witnessed by the two deputy ministers and expected to help businesses create opportunities.
