Taipei, Aug. 23 (CNA) Taiwan has moved up a notch to become the world's third best investment destination in the latest U.S. Business Environment Risk Intelligence (BERI) report, the Ministry of Economic Affairs (MOEA) said in a statement on Thursday. Taiwan scored 68 points in its overall profit opportunities recommendation (POR) rating, a rise from fourth place in the previous BERI report and is now ranked only behind Switzerland and Singapore, according to the MOEA's Department of Investment Services (DOIS).BERI is an American-based business analysis and rating service provider. POR is the overall indicator used by BERI to evaluate each country's investment climate and business risks. BERI releases its survey on the investment climates and competitiveness of the world's 50 major economies in April, August and December every year. The organization uses three main indicators to assess investment risk -- operating conditions (operations risk), political risk, and the foreign exchange/external accounts position (remittance & repatriation factor risk). In its August report, BERI gave Taiwan's overall investment climate a 1B rating, which means investors can consider making long-term investments in the country's stock market. Meanwhile, Taiwan also emerged as the world's safest place to invest in terms of foreign exchange/external accounts risk, while it ranked sixth in the world and first in Asia in operations risk. Also, the island was rated 13th worldwide in political risk and sixth in Asia, according to BERI.
