Tainan’s 400th anniversaryThe Next Wave after Net-Zero Carbon Emissions Conference on Corporate Sustainability and Respect for Human Rights in Supply ChainsExploring Business Opportunities

Tainan, the historical city and birthplace of many Taiwanese companies, has played a crucial role in driving the city’s economic growth. The contributions of local businesses are deeply woven into Tainan’s development. However, as the global economic and trade landscape evolves, businesses must adapt to stay competitive and forward-looking.

Recent global challenges such as the pandemic, climate change, and the rise of ESG issues have underscored the importance of corporate sustainability and respect for human rights in supply chains. Companies that prioritize environmental protection, labor rights, social responsibility, and corporate governance are better positioned to thrive in global markets. Since the introduction of UNGPs, there has been a global shift toward embedding human rights within corporate practices.

At the international level, EU, Germany, France, and others have enacted legislation mandating human rights due diligence for businesses and their supply chain partners. Japan and South Korea have also introduced similar guidelines and regulations. For companies engaged in international trade, aligning with these evolving standards is critical to maintaining their place in global supply chains.

In 2020, Taiwan launched its "National Action Plan on Business and Human Rights" (NAP). This initiative aims to institutionalize human rights protection within supply chains, with plans to introduce the updated NAP and "Guidelines for Enterprises to Respect Human Rights in the Supply Chain" in 2024. These efforts will help Taiwanese companies align with global standards, ensuring their competitiveness in the global supply chain.

This conference will explore the latest developments in business and human rights regulations in leading countries. It will feature case studies from industry-leading companies across various sectors, offering practical insights into human rights management within supply chains. The event aims to strengthen companies' capacity to align with evolving international human rights standards while balancing the pursuit of profitability with the protection of human rights, thereby contributing to sustainable development objectives.
