From September 5 to 9, Eastern Standard Time, National Science and Technology Council (NSTC) Minister Cheng-Wen Wu visited Washington, DC and New York. In Washington DC, Minister Wu led a delegation to the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) and the National Science Foundation (NSF) to enhance Taiwan-US bilateral S&T cooperation. Subsequently, Minister Wu attended several events in New York to strengthen ties in Taiwan-US S&T research cooperation.
On September 6, Minister Wu visited NIST and was received by NIST Director and Under Secretary of Commerce for Standards and Technology Dr. Laurie Locascio. During their meeting, Director Locascio stated that NIST is chiefly responsible for national technology standards, measurement, and industrial applications in emerging fields. In addition, Director Locascio briefed Minister Wu on the main goals and current state of the CHIPS and Science Act. Both sides exchanged views on related issues after Minister Wu shared Taiwan's policies related to semiconductors and AI.
Minister Wu then visited the NSF and was received by NSF Chief Science Officer Karen Marrongelle. During the meeting, both sides noted their long history of bilateral scientific and research cooperation, while reviewing the current progress of the Advanced Chip Engineering Design and Fabrication (ACED Fab) program. In addition, Minister Wu and Chief Science Officer Marrongelle discussed other topics such as AI research policy, innovation, and entrepreneurship.
Subsequently, Minister Wu visited New York to promote Taiwan's S&T policies and conduct exchanges with distinguished researchers and academics. During Minister Wu’s visit, he delivered keynote speeches at the annual conventions of the Chinese American Academic & Professional Society (CAAPS) and the Greater New York Region Overseas Taiwanese Pen Club. Both events highlighted the social and economic impact of AI and other technological fields. During his remarks, Minister Wu stated that by leveraging its existing advantages in semiconductors and ICT, Taiwan can help develop the necessary technology to tackle challenging social issues while promoting innovative, sustainable, inclusive, and resilient development. In addition, Minister Wu said that Taiwan is committed to promoting itself globally by becoming an AI hub, which will give the country the ability to conduct R&D on relevant technological systems while establishing a culture of widespread AI use.
After Minister Wu finished his East Coast visit, he went to San Francisco to conduct exchanges with the Silicon Valley technology community and other industry professionals at the NSTC funded Taiwan Science and Technology Hub Annual Conference.
