Premier Cho Jung-tai attended the European Innovation Week opening and reception Oct. 21 in Taipei City. The three-day event was jointly organized by the Ministry of Economic Affairs and the European Economic and Trade Office (EEAS) in Taiwan.
Lutz Güllner, EEAS head, and Hubert Gambs, deputy director-general of European Commission’s Directorate-General for Internal Market, Industry, Entrepreneurship and SMEs also attended the event.
The EU is Taiwan’s largest source of foreign investment, Cho noted and as of September this year, European businesses’ direct investment in Taiwan exceeded US$63.8 billion. The nation’s capabilities in artificial intelligence, information communication technology and semiconductors have resulted in European companies establishing research centers in Taiwan, the premier said.
Cho said he looked forward to seeing Taiwan work further with the European Union on projects of sustainability and innovation and emphasized that cooperation with European corporations facilitated stable development of Taiwan’s digital infrastructure, green energy industries and smart manufacturing, as well as innovative upgrade of new emerging technologies.
This year’s EIW centers on AI, the circular economy, robots, intelligent automation and sustainable energy, which are key economic and trade issues, the premier stated. He added that digital and green transformation of industry are also areas in which Taiwan and Europe work cooperatively.
The premier said that the administration’s Ten Major AI Infrastructure Projects, research and development in quantum technology and unmanned aerial vehicles aimed to make the country a leader in smart technology.
