The 11th APEC Food Security Ministerial Meeting was held on August 25 in Hangzhou, China. Taiwan’s delegation, led by Ministry of Agriculture (MOA) Deputy Minister Tu Wen-jane, shared the achievements of Taiwan’s promotion of “Smart Agriculture 2.0.” Deputy Minister Tu shared Taiwan’s experiences in utilizing AI and digital technology to enhance agricultural production efficiency, cope with extreme weather, and strengthen agricultural and food supply chain resilience. She also called on all APEC economies to deepen technology cooperation to collectively enhance Asia-Pacific regional food security.
MOA Deputy Minister Tu stated at the meeting that threats including extreme weather, natural disasters, and supply chain disruptions have been intensifying and have become agricultural challenges collectively faced by all economies. Taiwan has in recent years proactively promoted smart agriculture, using technologies including AI, sensors, data analysis, and automation, to assist farmers in enhancing production and management efficiency.Through Smart Agriculture 2.0, Taiwan has accelerated the practical application of innovative technologies, reduced the barriers to the introduction of technology by farmers, and made technology into a genuinely practical tool for agricultural producers to minimize climate and market risks.
Deputy Minister Tu also urged APEC to prioritize the needs of farmers and fishers; micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs); and small-scale producers alongside its efforts to promote agricultural digital transformation and technological innovation. Through technology sharing, capacity building, and regional cooperation, agricultural producers of all sizes can share the fruits of technological development, thereby further strengthening agricultural resilience and food security.
The 11th APEC Food Security Ministerial Meeting focused on how to use innovation and digital technology to promote agricultural development, stimulate rural economies, and ensure food security. Attending member economies reached a consensus on strengthening the resilience of regional food systems, adopting documents including “Principles for Strengthening Food Systems Resilience in the APEC Region through Innovation and Digitalization” and the “Joint Statement on the 11th APEC Food Security Ministerial Meeting.” They emphasized the importance of utilizing science, data, and digital technologies to enhance the adaptive capacity of food systems in the face of climate and supply chain risks.
The MOA stated that given climate and global supply chain uncertainties, APEC economies need to do even more to deepen the sharing of agricultural technology, information, and practices. APEC is an important platform for Taiwan to participate in Asia-Pacific agricultural and food security cooperation, and in the future Taiwan will continue to share its experiences in smart agriculture and resilient production through APEC while deepening collaboration with other member economies. It will transform the outcomes of international exchanges into a driving force for the development of its agricultural sector,and work with other economies to build a more resilient, inclusive, and sustainable Asia-Pacific agricultural and food system.
