The Zacros Taiwan Co., a subsidiary of the Fujimori Kogyo Co. of Japan, a major producer of optical surface protection film (which signed a letter of intent with the Ministry of Economic Affairs at the end of September), broke ground on Nov. 21 for a new plant in the Kaohsiung Science Park section of the Southern Taiwan Science Park. The new plant, which is costing about NT$1.851 billion, will produce protective film for liquid crystal display polarizers and OCA release film. Once completed, it will provide jobs for about 100 people. Taiwan's prominent Shin Kong Group plans to acquire a 10% stake in Zacros Taiwan through its subsidiary, the Shin Kong Synthetic Fibers Corp.
Fujimori Kogyo was established in 1914 and is known for its core coating and laminating technology. The resin packaging materials that it produces can be used in many different fields, including electronic materials, foods, biomedicine, daily products, logistics, and construction. The company combines technologies to provide single materials with multiple functions, and its LCD polarizer protective film and OCA release film hold first place in global market share.
Confident that Asia will continue to lead growth in the electronic materials market, and that Taiwan's optoelectronics industry holds a pivotal global position and has a burgeoning demand for high-end materials, Fujimori decided to set up production and sales bases on the island in order to be close to its customers and satisfy their needs quickly. The protective film and release film that the new plant will produce are key upstream materials for the display industry, and production in Taiwan will lower production costs for domestic manufacturers by shortening their materials procurement time and strengthening the supply of upstream materials for flat-panel displays. The company also plans to procure some of the equipment and raw materials it needs in Taiwan, and this will have a positive effect on upgrading the technology of Taiwan's flat-panel display industry in the fields of equipment and materials.
