With the rise in economic standards, people have become more demanding in terms of their living environment and food quality. This is why detecting melamine in milk powder, testing for plasticizers in sports drinks, or the manufacturing of secure and advanced smart-phones are all related to Agilent Technologies's precision test and measurement technology. Moreover, it is through advanced technology that Agilent Technologies helps improve the quality of people's living and work environment, which is precisely the mission that Agilent Technologies, as the world's largest test and measurement company, aspires to fulfill.
Agilent Technologies originates from Silicon Valley's famed Hewlett Packard and it was spun off as an independent company in 1999 following a shift in the group's strategy. It then created news as the largest-ever initial public offering (IPO) on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) by a Silicon Valley company. Agilent currently has more than 100 branches around the world, it has manufacturing and R&D sites in the US, China, Germany, UK, Japan, Malaysia and Singapore.
Agilent Technologies' services span electronics testing, wireless communications, aerospace and defense, chemical analysis, life sciences and as well as cancer testing. It specializes in the development as well as the manufacture of advanced testing equipment. The company currently employs around 18,700 people around the world with the capability to manufacture, sell and support products around the world. In fiscal year2011, Agilent's revenues reached US$6.6 billion, of which 40% came from Asia.
As the world's premier testing company, engineers, scientists, manufacturers, corporations, researchers and government agencies around the world rely on Agilent's testing equipment in carrying out their testing work. Vice President for Field Marketing of Agilent Taiwan David Lo says Agilent provides outstanding testing services to industries ranging ""from family entertainment to national security; from food hygiene to network stability; from wireless communication to discovery of genetic heritage for the purpose of disease diagnosis."" Through its outstanding services to these industries, he says, Agilent helps make living environments safe, healthy, happy and efficient.
In 2008, the company acquired Escort Instruments Corp. to profile Agilent in growing its basic instrument market share. Then, in 2010, the company merged with Varian Inc. with the aim of providing an integrated service ranging from low to high-end products in the life sciences market; in 2011, it bought Accelicon Technologies to further consolidate its position in the market dealing with models of semiconductor equipment. In June 2011, Agilent purchased Centellax, a company which specializes in the development, production and testing of key technologies for high speed communication system and equipment.
Agilent is proud to claim that globally only Agilent Technologies has the capacity to provide testing services of such breadth-and-depth and satisfy the massive demand for specialized technology from the world's electronics and biotech industries. Thanks to its long track record of providing outstanding testing services and its strong market share, the Agilent name year after year appears amongst the top products selected by the world's various technical publications as a global business leader.
Agilent is not only a global leader in technology. Its corporate culture is widely envied as well. Although the company was spun off from HP as an independent company in 1999, it has the heritage core values of ""innovation and contribution, trust and respect, team work and doing business with uncompromising integrity"" embodied in ""The HP Way."" Agilent Technologies Taiwan not only offers its employees good opportunities for personal development, it also provides training programs in-land or overseas on a regular basis. Agilent's employees average seniority are about ten or more years. Lo says, ""The test and measurement industry is quite stable yet full of potential growth. Employees are thus quite happy to put down roots and grow in the industry.""
For its strong business performance and employee - centered management culture, Agilent Taiwan was ranked No. 1 in the three categories within the testing service segment of Common Wealth Magazine's Human Resources Index Survey in September 2001. The three categories were ""ability to attract skilled employees"", ""employee training"", and ""incentivizing employees."" In 2003, it won Taiwan's top employer award in Hewitt Associates and CHEERS magazine's survey of""Best Employers in Asia 2003 - Taiwan List."" Agilent has also appeared on the list of such honors as ""Taiwan's Best Employer Award,"" ""Taiwan's Most Admired Enterprise,"" ""The Lifestyles of Health and Sustainability Award,"" ""The Outstanding Business Award"", etc.
Actually, if we trace back to 1970 when HP first established its branch office in Taiwan, we could say that Agilent already has over 40 years of history in Taiwan. Since 1999 when the company began to operate as an independent entity, Agilent Taiwan's headquarters has been based in Taipei, with branch offices in Kaohsiung and Chungli. It currently has over 210 employees in Taiwan and has achieved outstanding results in different areas including sales, marketing, customer service, and customer consulting and training.
Lo says, considering people's increasing demands in terms of living environment and the quality of food that they eat, Agilent continues to introduce new products in key areas. For instance in Taiwan, when melanine was found in milk powder and also when the plasticizers were discovered in sports drinks, Agilent supplied relevant testing equipment to concerned testing entities. ""Agilent Taiwan's services increase in tandem with greater demands and standards,"" Lo says. Moreover, as Taiwan's electronics industry has become the indispensable OEM partner of the international electronics giants, Taiwan Agilent has made silent contributions behind the scenes with its electronic measurement and testing services. Thus, almost all of the major Taiwanese electronics companies making a splash in the global market either through their own brand or as an OEM are clients of Agilent Taiwan. From a global perspective, Agilent may be seen as a test and measurement instrument manufacturer. Domestically speaking, however, Agilent Taiwan is working towards the goal of being a ""technology services"" firm.

In 2008, Agilent Taiwan established a laboratory facility at its Chungli branch office. Lo says, ""The land in Chungli is owned by Agilent. It is a form of commitment to Taiwan by a foreign company."" The Chungli branch also has an equipment maintenance and repair center aimed at meeting the demand for repair and calibration verification of equipment by its customers. Not having to send equipment for maintenance and repairs overseas thereby saves Agilent's customers both time and money. It also boosts Agilent Taiwan's overall service quality. It also has an education center, where it can provide a comprehensive operation and application education courses to customers.
Since 2000, Agilent Taiwan has organized the Agilent Electronic Testing Forum for Taiwanese engineers where new reports have been published every year on such topics as new technology industries, changes in domestic industries and trends in international markets as well as the development of related technologies. The 2012 forum included reports from 18 presentations on measurement applications and 14 exhibitions involving three main themes - ""digital testing,"" ""wireless communication measurement,"" and ""component and semiconductor testing"" - to help engineers quickly familiarize themselves with future trends in a rapidly changing technology era.
Lo believes that Agilent's services are closely tied to local industry demand and market competitiveness. ""Agilent Taiwan brings in top global equipment to Taiwan to assist Taiwanese electronics manufacturers performing better in the global markets with the expectation that Taiwan's industries will transform to become higher value-added industries,""says Lo. Agilent Taiwan also contributes to the development of in-house technology, and helps domestic companies overcome measurement and testing challenges, thereby raising their global competitiveness.
