From a strategic point of view, Taiwan is located in the heart of East Asia. Taiwan is a necessary route for foreign companies entering the Chinese, Northeast Asian, and Southeast Asian markets. In the future, foreign companies can collaborate with Taiwan's funds, technology, human resources, and management to jointly develop the Chinese and East Asian markets and expand their business in the Asia Pacific, thus turning Taiwan into their Asia Pacific operating headquarters. Because Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport is located in Taoyuan City, the city has been nicknamed the "gateway city." Thus, Taoyuan has a clear advantage in its geographical location.
Taoyuan City is located along the north-west coast of Taiwan, in proximity to New Taipei City, Hsinchu County, and Yilan County. In early eras, the area contained many peach tree plantations, so the area was known as the "peach orchard."
Most of the city consists of rolling plateaus, and has a long narrow shape going from northwest to southeast. Taoyuan faces the ocean on one side and the mountains on the other. The Dahan River, starting from Shimen Reservoir and passing through Daxi's northeast side, divides the city into the southwest and northeast sections. Some parts of southeastern Taoyuan are hilly and terraced lands, with mountains than 300 meters. Further southeast, the elevation becomes higher, the slopes steeper, and the valleys narrower. To the northeast the land is gentler, with mostly plateaus and terraces. The rivers are short and flow out to sea.
Due to its topography and geology, the main characteristic of the Taoyuan plateau is artificial ponds that provide farmers with water for irrigation. At its peak, there were 8,846 ponds, giving the area the nickname "Thousand-pond Township." Wherever there were ponds, there would be settlements. The ponds store water for irrigation, and provide locations for aquaculture and leisure. The ponds also make the landscape more unique. In its heyday, there was abundant agriculture, aquaculture, and livestock farming in Taoyuan. Even today, many of Taoyuan's important buildings came from the building of these ponds. Thus, they form the basis for Taoyuan’s "pond culture."
Taoyuan City and its cultural attractions can be divided into the following three parts:
Eastern and northern Taoyuan have always been dominated by Minnan settlements, including Luzhu, Taoyuan, Guishan, Bade, Daxi, and Dayuan Districts. The core development area is Taoyuan District.
Western and southern Taoyuan are where the Hakka people settled, including Guanyin, Zhongli, Xinwu, Yangmei, Pingzhen, and Longtan Districts. Here, Zhongli District is the main focus of development.
Indigenous people live mostly in Fuxing District and parts of southern Daxi District, and mostly belong to the Atayal tribe. Fuxing District/city and the district office are the main center of development.
